I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Nell Callahan, the head coordinator of Verse One Dance Troupe at Rutgers New Brunswick. You can listen to the full conversation here. My interview with Nell was part of a series I had with fellow podcasters, including Brianna, Dina, and Hammad. Their websites will be linked towards the end of this blog post. Nell and I's discussion focused on Verse One’s role as a beginner-friendly dance group on campus and their upcoming Cypher Block Party fundraiser. This event supports two meaningful organizations: Camp Breakerz in Gaza and Solo Expression, which provides dance therapy for developmentally disabled individuals, at-risk youth, and seniors.
Verse One Dance Troupe’s Mission and Community
Verse One stands out as a welcoming space for students new to dance. Nell emphasized how the troupe encourages creativity and self-expression without pressure, making it easy for beginners to join and grow. The group meets regularly to practice various styles, with a focus on breaking and hip-hop culture.
The troupe’s community extends beyond dance skills. Members support each other’s personal growth and share a passion for using dance as a positive outlet. This supportive environment helps students build confidence and find a sense of belonging on campus.
The Cypher Block Party Fundraiser
The upcoming Cypher Block Party is more than just a dance event. It’s a fundraiser designed to bring the campus community together while raising money for two impactful causes. Nell described the event as a celebration of dance culture, featuring performances, cyphers (dance circles), and opportunities for attendees to participate.
The funds raised will go to:
Camp Breakerz: Located in Gaza, this organization established the first dance school in the Nuseirat Refugee Camp. Camp Breakerz uses breaking and performing arts to help youth process trauma, build resilience, and find hope through creativity. Their work provides a vital outlet for young people living in difficult circumstances.
Solo Expression: This nonprofit offers dance therapy programs for developmentally disabled individuals, at-risk youth, and seniors. Their programs focus on emotional healing, physical wellness, and building confidence through movement.
Nell shared how these causes align with Verse One’s values of community support and creative expression. The fundraiser aims to raise awareness about the power of dance to heal and connect people across different backgrounds.
How Dance Helps Build Resilience and Confidence
During the interview, Nell highlighted the transformative power of dance. For many members of Verse One, dance is not just a hobby but a way to cope with stress and express emotions. This is especially true for the youth supported by Camp Breakerz and Solo Expression.
Dance therapy programs like those offered by Solo Expression use movement to improve emotional and physical health. Participants often report increased self-esteem and a stronger sense of control over their bodies. For young people facing trauma, dance can provide a safe space to process feelings and build resilience.
Verse One’s commitment to beginner-friendly dance means that anyone can experience these benefits. Nell encouraged students who are curious but hesitant to give dance a try, emphasizing that the troupe values effort and enthusiasm over experience.
What to Expect at the Cypher Block Party
The Cypher Block Party promises an energetic and inclusive atmosphere. Attendees can expect:
Live dance battles and cyphers where dancers take turns showcasing their skills in a circle.
Performances by Verse One members and guest dancers.
Opportunities for beginners to join in and learn basic moves.
Food and music that reflect the vibrant culture of breaking and hip-hop.
Information booths about Camp Breakerz and Solo Expression to learn more about their missions.
Nell hopes the event will inspire more students to get involved with dance and community causes. She also sees it as a chance to celebrate the creativity and resilience of dancers on campus and beyond.
